What is planned giving?

Planned giving is a combination of philanthropy and smart financial planning. Planned gifts typically benefit YOU as donor, and Maumee Valley as recipient of your generosity. You usually get immediate tax benefits when your gift commitment is made, and perhaps a new income stream. Maumee Valley usually gets a gift of cash, securities, insurance or valuable property that matures at some later time. Frequently, planned gifts allow you to do more for Maumee Valley than you might think you are capable of, while feeling it less and saving significant taxes.

There are many different ways to make a planned gift, ranging from simple to complex. These include will bequests which are the most common and easiest. Life insurance policies and charitable gift annuities are other simple planned giving devices, as well as charitable remainder trusts and charitable lead trusts.

Almost any kind of asset can be used in planned giving, in one device or another.  Securities, retirement plans, real estate, and tangible items such as art, antiques, rare books, and valuable collections are all examples of planned gift devices.

Planned gifts almost always go into Maumee Valley's endowment fund, which is crucial to the school's financial security.

Maumee Valley created The Weathervane Society to recognize alumni, parents and friends who have helped to ensure that the school will successfully weather the future by making a planned gift of any kind. You are an automatic member if you have made any sort of planned gift to Maumee Valley, including naming the school as a beneficiary in your will, an insurance policy, a retirement fund or other instrument.
