Grades 9-12
There is no typical student at Maumee Valley Country Day School. Students can be who they are and become who they were meant to be. The Upper School gives a lot of opportunities for exploration - from journeying into intellectual outer limits to testing the waters of team sports to leaping into the dramatic unknown of the stage. It is a place where everyone takes risks because it is safe enough to do so.
The Upper School emphasizes self-discipline, problem-solving, and daily engagement with the task of learning. We encourage students to pursue their interests with passion and to meet their obligations with enthusiasm. We value a diversity of opinion, talent, and backgrounds. But we are united in our appreciation of hard work, individual achievement, and intellectual ambition.
A wide variety of courses is offered ranging from the traditional math, science, English, foreign language and history offerings to a number of specialty classes, such as world events, probability and statistics, microbiology, earth science, anthropology and digital media production. MV also offers a number of fine arts courses such as design, art history, drawing, choir, string ensemble, acting, and directing. All freshmen must elect two semester-length courses (Introduction to Fine Arts) in art, music or theater as a foundation for the more advanced fine arts classes.
Winterim
A distinctive feature of the Upper School is our Winterim program. Winterim enhances students' learning with an intensive, focused experience. Students select from offerings that include classes at Maumee Valley, educational trips, study at other schools through The Network of Complimentary Schools, and independent study projects both within and outside of the Toledo area. Past offerings have ranged from teaching English in Ethiopia to stage combat to examining the science of war. At the end of their fourth year, Maumee Valley graduates have enjoyed a broad range of experiences and are well prepared to pursue their education at the next level.
