| | Q. | What is an independent school? | | A. | Independent schools are private, pre-collegiate learning institutions, each with a unique mission. They are nonprofit institutions governed by independent boards of trustees and funded through tuition, charitable contributions, and endowment income. Independent schools uphold high standards of educational quality and are publicly accountable to parents, communities, and the agencies that accredit them. |

| Q. | Why do families send their children to independent schools? | | A. | The quality of the educational experience is one of the leading reasons that families select independent schools. Described by the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), the U.S. Department of Education conducted the National Educational Longitudinal Study (NELS), and confirmed that larger percentages of students in independent schools are enrolled in advanced courses than in public, parochial, and other private schools. NAIS students do twice as much homework as their counterparts, watch only two-thirds as much television, are significantly more likely to participate in varsity or intramural sports, and are more likely to agree that students and teachers get along well, discipline is fair, and teaching is good. |

| Q. | Do all of the grades share the same building? | | A. | No. Maumee Valley's 70-acre campus features separates areas for each division (Preschool, Lower School, Middle School, Upper School). This allows each student a learning environment that is age-appropriate and tailored to his or her developmental needs. |

| Q. | Can my child visit Maumee Valley to get a feel for the students and the environment? | | A. | We require all students to visit as part of their Admissions process. Three-year olds visit for two hours; Preschool (P4), Kindergarten (P5) and Transition Group visit from 9 a.m. - noon; and grades 1-12 visit for a full school day. |

| Q. | What does Maumee Valley look for in its students? | | A. | Maumee Valley seeks to admit students who have the academic and personal potential to thrive in our college preparatory program and who can make positive contributions to our community. We welcome applications from students with diverse backgrounds. |

| Q. | Is there an entrance exam? | | A. | Prospective students ages 3 through Kindergarten are assessed by a Maumee Valley teacher. For grades 1-12, admissions testing includes an IQ test, a reading/verbal test, and a math test. A written essay is also required for grades 6-12. |

| Q. | Is financial assistance available? | | A. | Maumee Valley provides more than $1.5 million in financial assistance each year to approximately 40 percent of our students. |

| Q. | What kinds of colleges do Maumee Valley students go to? | | A. | In the past two years, 81 MVCDS graduates have attended 53 different four year colleges throughout the country. Students matriculate at a range of schools: large, public universities like University of Michigan, Ohio State University, and Indiana University; small, private colleges like Williams College, Kenyon College, and Claremont McKenna College; and everything in between. Many students attend very selective colleges like Yale University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Carnegie Mellon University, and so on, and some students choose to apply to and attend colleges that have a certain program, major, athletic team, or location that appeals to them in particular. |
