Raytheon Company Awards Scholarship to MVCDS Student

Raytheon Company, as part of its MathMovesU Program, has awarded $300,000 in scholarships and grants to students and their schools. The program was designed to engage middle school students in math and science. Sam Peters, a 6th grade student at Maumee Valley Country Day School, is among the 150 students nationwide who have been chosen to receive a scholarship.
Sam will receive a $1,000 MathMovesU Middle School Scholarship to be used for a math, science, or technology camp or program, or saved for the first year of college. In addition, Maumee Valley will receive a matching grant from Raytheon.

The scholarship recipients were selected from a pool of 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students who created a multimedia presentation that illustrates the importance of math in the world around them. The submissions were evaluated on creativity, originality, time commitment, and the use of math equations to demonstrate an enthusiasm for the subject.

Sam’s presentation titled, It’s All Around Me, demonstrates how his hobbies and passions, from travel to golf to cars, are all affected by math. He included diagrams and equations in his impressive Powerpoint presentation, and referenced various mathematical concepts such as trajectory, finding the hypotenuse of a right triangle, and Pythagorean theorem.

Congratulations to Sam on this amazing accomplishment and congratulations to all of the scholarship recipients and their schools.
