Middle School students can anticipate interesting and challenging years ahead. Maumee Valley students in grades 7 and 8 are introduced to a curriculum that is based on four values, or touchstones: participation, kindness, respect and responsibility. These maturing students develop their leadership and team-building skills beyond the classroom through participation in student government, sports, community service projects and after-school clubs.
Required and elective Middle School classes also enhance and emphasize critical thinking and creative problem solving. A rigorous schedule keeps students engaged, motivated and challenged throughout each day. Active and thoughtful lessons are the norm, and students are expected to collaborate with their teachers and peers daily. Eighth grade speeches, interdisciplinary science and society research presentations, as well as small, seminar-style classes further prepare students for Maumee Valley Upper School.
Each year in Maumee Valley Middle School culminates with week-long class trips –this time stressing “survival” skills. At the end of grade 7, students must “Navigate through a Natural World” as they travel to rustic locations, such as Wolverine, Michigan and Ohio Pile, Pennsylvania. Grade 8 students also go on a one-week, urban survival trip, “Navigating through an Urban World,” where they must call on their instincts and knowledge to budget money and follow a pre-determined map of required activities. |
