Upper School: 9 through 12
Maumee Valley’s school-wide mission is to prepare our students for what comes next. Our students in the Upper School become ready, not only for successful collegiate experiences, but also for the world beyond primary and secondary education.
Upper School academics focus on preparing and challenging our students to reach their full potential. Specialty courses like environmental science, fine arts, anthropology, and digital media complement more traditional courses, including advanced math, science, history, and English. Maumee Valley students also have opportunities to engage in college-level coursework through Advanced Placement and Honors courses.
Global Scholar Certificate
Maumee Valley offers students the opportunity to pursue a Global Scholar Certificate over the course of four years in the Upper School. This Certificate recognizes students who embrace opportunities to learn about world issues and events; make connections across borders; dedicate themselves to community service; and demonstrate a strong commitment to preparing themselves to live in a globalized world.
Winterim
Winterim is often a life-altering experience for Upper School students. This annual, three-week program engages student outside the classroom so that they can gain a deeper knowledge of specific interests. Students often use this total immersion experience to explore future careers. In fact, Winterim has proven to be highly influential in helping students decide what they want to do with the rest of their lives -- while enlightening them on the steps to take to get there.
Each November, Upper School students choose from an array of on-campus courses, culture-oriented travel experiences, independent study or focused study through The Network of Complementary Schools. Specifically, some students have taught English in Ethiopia, while others have explored America by Amtrak. All Winterim experiences, however, promote independence, self-motivation and other important life skills. Winterim closes with a student-hosted fair, where participants present the results of individual experiences. |
