  • Algebra Foundations - Grades 8-11

    This course will focus on building the foundations for a conceptual understanding of algebra and the use of different methods of solving problems. The students will learn algebraic expressions, linear and quadratic equations in various formats, linear inequalities, systems of equations and inequalities, understanding famous parent functions and their graphs, conic sections, trigonometric, and logarithmic functions. Students will work with various polynomial factoring and zeros of functions. This in-depth-study will be done in direct instruction, collaborative group work, homework assignments, and technology. The students will make the transition from concrete arithmetic to the symbolic language of algebra. They will develop abstract reasoning skills necessary to excel in math, science, and problem solve in any other area needed.

    Instructor: Dr. Ariss has been in the field of teaching since 2002. She started teaching at The Sr. of Notre Dame: Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, and Chemistry. Dr. Ariss joined MVCDS in 2006. She serves as the Upper School Mathematics Department Chair at MVCDS and teaches various upper school mathematics courses, such as Algebra I, Algebra II, Pre-Calculus, Honors Pre-Calculus, Trigonometry, and Calculus I. Dr. Ariss is also a private mathematics tutor: Algebra II, Pre-Calculus, and AP Calculus.
  • Around the World in Five Days - Grade 1-4

    Travel the world in this camp as we visit countries such as Spain, Japan, and Antarctica. Each day we will check our baggage with the MVCDS Airlines and board a “jet” headed to our destination. We will enjoy games, crafts, science experiments and snacks from each country we visit.

    Instructor: Elaine Sneider has over 40 years of experience teaching children. She has a degree in Early Childhood Education and has been teaching theatre and enrichment classes since 1992. She is the owner of Adventures in Education, is the Drama Director at St. Joan of Arc & OLPH, is a Piano and Vocal Instructor, teaches enrichment classes and camps for St. Rose, OLPH, Bedford Community, and directs a year-round theatre program for K-8 in Maumee, Ohio. A published playwright, she has written 35 children's musicals and has directed over 125 shows.
  • Chess Starting Out - Grades 1-8

    Students will learn the fundamentals of Chess and it's rules and beginner strategies.

  • Gym Chasers Basketball Camp - Grades 1-8 (ages 5-14)

    This camp will teach the fundamentals of the game, shooting, dribbling, defense, passing, footwork and most of all how to compete and be a team player.

    Instructors: Zeke Hill & Dontavyion Fleming have combined over 15 years of experience. They have from Junior High, High school, College and Professional players they have coach. College players they have worked with represent schools such as Michigan University, Michigan State, Iowa University, Iowa State, Arizona State, The Ohio State University, Butler University and many more.

  • Jr. Chef - Grades 4-8

    Cook like a Jr. Chef! We will create healthy snacks, appetizers, meals, desserts, and even our own cookbook. Cooking with kids is a great way to educate them about proper nutrition, what's in season, planning and preparing meals and reading food labels. Plus, it can encourage them to eat healthy foods. Cooking may even help get students interested in trying healthy foods they might typically refuse to eat. Help me expand their horizons by getting them in the kitchen!

    Instructor: Crystal Lieb has been a SummerTime teacher for eight years. She enjoys creating healthy and delicious dishes at home for her family and friends. During the school year, she works as Lead Art Teacher at Hope Learning Academy of Toledo and is a member of the afterschool cooking club.
  • Kite Making and the Science of Flight! Grades 5-8

    Students will learn the history of kite design; they will create their own kite pattern from homemade instruments, test, and record how high the kite flys.

  • Making Art w/ Non-Traditional Items - Grades 7-12

    Students will make predominantly 3D pieces with found objects and other materials that aren't traditional materials.

    Instructor: Steve Athanas has a BA in Art Education from the University of Toledo. He has spent four-plus decades performing in various rock bands in the area. He is now focused on the Visual Arts and has shown his work in galleries.
  • Ready, Set, 1st Grade! - Grade 1

    It's a big step from kindergarten to first grade! To help with the transition, we'll focus on a vowel a day, basic math skills, listening exercises, and age appropriate problem-solving activities. This camp will help your soon-to-be first grader get ready with practice in these fundamental skills.

    Instructor: Kitty Weinberg has been teaching at Maumee Valley for the past 22 years. She brings a unique perspective as she has taught kindergarten through fourth grade.
  • Squishy Circuit Kidz Labs - Grades 1-4

    Let's have some squishy fun! Create simple electrical robotic machines with play-dough, batteries, and simple electrical circuits.

    Fee: $149
    Instructor: Claudette Garcia is a Maumee Valley Extended Time Care teacher and a mother of four boys, who has lived many of these experiences with her own children. She believes in educational programs that provide learning mixed with fun and practical insights for kids.
  • Tennis - Grades 1-8

    Shadow Valley Tennis Club Pros are proud to offer a tennis program for Beginners, Intermediates & Advanced players.

    Beginner students will learn basic skills including ground strokes, volleys, serves and overheads & work on their court positioning. They will also work on basic hand-eye coordination which will advance their play.

    Intermediate & Advanced players will not only work on their acquired skills but also concentrate on tennis strategy for singles and doubles play. The strategy will allow them to take their game to the next level.

    Each group will also play out points, games and compete in mini tournaments.

    Fee: $149
    Materials: Please bring a tennis racquet and a water bottle.
    Instructors: Classes will be taught by experienced Shadow Valley Pros.
  • Ukelele Camp - Grades 5-8

    This class is designed for students who are just beginning their study of this instrument. Tuning, strumming patterns and chord progressions will be taught using a variety of popular songs. Students will perform a concert for their families at the end of the week.

    Fee: $149

    Instructor: Kim Buehler has been teaching in the Toledo area for over 25 years. She was part of the voice faculty at the University of Toledo and teaches voice at Toledo School for the Arts. Kim also maintains a studio of private voice students at her Sylvania home. You can hear her on various radio/TV commercials such as I Love My Zoo, Magic Wok, Toledo Just Look At Us Now, and many more. This is her eighth summer with MVCDS SummerTime camps!

  • Beginning Chess - Grades 1-8

    Have you ever watched a chess game and wondered, “How can they sit like that for so long?” This course is your opportunity to find out if chess is a game for you. The goal is to help you realize that chess not only is an exciting game to play, but it also has the added benefit of helping develop analytical thinking skills requiring logic and concentration. This program is for students who have never played chess before and for beginners who want to improve basic skills in chess. Students will learn the rules of the game, strategies for developing pieces and controlling the center, learn the basic checkmates and tactics, read and write chess notation, and have time to practice these skills with other classmates.

    Instructor: Toledo resident Jonathan Doran is a former Ohio High School State Champion who specializes in opening and endgame theory and currently trains the St. John's Jesuit High School team. Known for being among the top players and instructors in the area, Jonathan is greatly involved in scholastic chess. Currently a member of the Ohio Scholastic Chess Association Board of Directors, President of the Greater Toledo Area High School Chess League, and a USCF Senior Tournament Director with experience running many local and state chess events, he has given lessons for ten years to players of all ages and skill levels. He also assists strong players with tournament preparation, including one previously who has multiple national scholastic titles to his name. He is enthusiastic about working with students who have a desire to learn and develop their skills.
  • Board Game Design - Grades 5-8

    Students will learn about the principals of board game design through playing and analyzing a variety of board games. Groups will work cooperatively to design a playable game and tweak their design through play- testing with other groups. Finished games will be donated to the library at MVCDS.

  • How to Draw: Pop Culture - Grades 1-8

    Let's draw and be creative! Each day we will work on our drawing skills by learning the steps of how to draw cartoons and movie characters like Pokemon, Minecraft, Star Wars, Emojis, Shopkins, Superheroes, and anything else that sparks their interest. We will draw with pencil, markers, crayons, and oil pastel. Students will come home with their own personalized drawings, along with how-to-draw packets so they can keep drawing all summer long. This class is for both girls and boys and the kiddos just learning to draw or those who just love to sketch everything!

    Fee: $149
    Materials: Please bring an old apron or paint shirt.
    Instructor: Crystal Lieb has been a SummerTime teacher for eight years. She enjoys creating her own artwork, viewing work by other artists, and teaching art to young people. During the school year, she works as Lead Art Teacher at Hope Learning Academy of Toledo. The experience of creating art is very important, so she uses the artistic process of Play, Plan, Make, Share and Reflect. So be ready to have fun, explore and create!
  • Introduction to Calculus - Grades 10-12

    This course deals with calculating and evaluating functions that change at variable rates. The major concepts of calculus include limits, differentiation, integration, and applications of differentiation. In addition to these major concepts, we will explore different subtopics and methods of solving various problems graphically, numerically, and algebraically.
     
    Day 1: Functions: After a brief review of the basics, we will dive into Taylor series as a way of working with and approximating complicated functions.
    Day 2: Limits: This is an essential concept for calculus. We will be evaluating one-sided limits, infinite limits, and limits at infinity, along with limits involving trigonometric functions.
    Day 3: Differentiation: One of the essential applications for limits is the concept of the derivative of functions. Having a conceptual understanding of differentiation along with mastering the process of differentiating functions is the crucial component of any calculus course.
    Day 4: Integration: Students will use the indefinite integral formulas along with other techniques of integration like substitution, integration by parts.
    Day 5: Applications: Students will get busy in this chapter with applications of the definite integral to problems of finding areas bounded by curves, volumes by slicing, and lengths of arcs of a curve.

  • Kids in the Kitchen: Picnic Food - Grades 1-4

    Do you enjoy cooking? If you do this class is for you. We will learn the basics of kitchen safety and enjoy putting together foods that are especially good for a picnic. This camp will also include food games and activities. Please make us aware of any food allergies.

    We will use and build with Legos to perform fun experiments, such as balloon powered Lego car races, fun science Lego games, and much more!

  • Mini Mozart Camp - Grades 1-4

    This class is designed for younger students and will teach basic musical concepts such as rhythm, dynamics and note recognition through a variety of music-based games and fun activities. Students will use their voices, move their bodies and stretch their creativity in this fun-filled camp for grades 1-4!

  • Speed, Agility & Coordination Clinic - Grades 9-12

    This Clinic is designed to enhance the current Speed, Agility, and Coordination skills of participants. Specialized coaching will be provided for athletes and emerging athletes of all skills levels.

    Instructors: Tara Morrin is a six year veteran of the Maumee Valley coaching staff. Tara is Co-Founder of Total Speed Development LLC, a level 2 certified coach through USA Tack and Field.

    Jack Dias is a eight year veteran of the Maumee Valley Varsity Coaching Staff: eight years as a Head Coach of the Spring Track and Field program and four years as the Head Coach of Maumee Valley Varsity Cross Country team.
  • Step Leadership - Grades 5-8

    Individuals will build character, leadership, team & communication skills while creating a step performance together. Theatrically they will practice stage presence, focuses and breaking stage fright. A talent portion may be incorporated which will allow the youth to showcase their talent

    Materials: Please bring comfortable clothes, shoes, water, towels. Prepare to sweat.
    Instructor: Pasha Carter loves to have fun! She thrives on being a mentor to youth of all ages including preschoolers! She is extremely passionate and assertive with theatre and Step coaching. Being thyself allows others to be themselves, which is she also encourages! She is an artist of many gifts!

  • Musical Theatre: Act II (Give My Regards To Broadway) Grades 4-8

    Every class member will have a chance to be a "STAR' in at least one scene from famous Broadway shows. Shows include Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, South Pacific, Cinderella, My Fair Lady, and more. Learn how to put on a musical and improve your acting, singing and dancing skills, how to prepare your resume and more. Campers will receive a CD with the accompanying music on it plus a copy of the script.

Cancellation Policy
You may cancel up to one week prior to the first day of a class or camp and will receive a full refund minus the 25% non-refundable deposit. Cancellation within one week before the first day of a class or camp may result in no refund due to teachers' preparations based on expected enrollment. All classes and camps are subject to cancellation due to insufficient enrollment. If this should occur, you will be notified and a full refund given.

Before & After Camp Care Available

Adults with experience in before and after school care programs care for and supervise the children. The program offers creative and fun activities, such as games, arts, and crafts.

Morning Before Camp Care 7:30am - 9:00am

Fees listed below are for one week of camp (Mon-Fri) at the class times specified.

Full-day (Grades 1-8)

$259: Includes Before Camp Care, choice of Morning Class, Lunch Supervision, choice of Afternoon Class, and After Camp Care.

Half-day Options (Grades 1-8)

Hobbit Camp: 
Ages 2 and a half (by Sept.) through 3 years old; and ages 4 to 5 years.

Full-day
$239: Includes Before Camp Care, Morning Hobbit Camp, Lunch Supervision, Afternoon Hobbit Camp, and After Camp Care.

Half-day Options
$139: Morning session (includes Before Camp Care)

Lunch Supervision: Preschool - Grade 8 (12:00-12:30pm)
$50: The lunch supervision includes time to eat lunch brought from home with a beverage (refrigeration is provided) and time for socializing and free time on the playground. Lunch Supervision is included in the Full-Day Fee, so there is no Lunch Supervision fee for students staying for a full day.

High School Classes (Grades 9-12)
Classes are individually priced.

Registration Fees
All registration fees are due in full before the first day of class or your spot is not guaranteed. This includes your application and the total cost of each program. No classes will be prorated.

Payment is accepted by check, MasterCard, VISA, American Express, Discover, or a money order made payable to Maumee Valley Country Day School. Cash will also be accepted in the Lower School office.

Confirmation
A confirmation notice is sent upon receipt of a completed application and payment. Your confirmation will contain information regarding check-in procedures.
