Intensives
The purpose of Intensives is to offer a personalized education through choice, the pursuit of passion, and exploring various interests. Students enroll in two intensives during this time: one in the morning and one in the afternoon with a fine arts intensive and PE class in the middle of the day. A sampling of recent intensives include: How to Get Your First Job, Why Black Lives Matter, Leadership Academy, Volleyball, Boat Regatta, CSI: Maumee Valley, Journalism, Kitchen of the World, Math at the Midway, and Fairy Telenovela.

Did you love the movie “Black Panther”? Why was it such a success? What made it so special? And what is Afrofuturism? If you would like to break down stereotypes, biases, social barriers and limitations, and empower individuals to be themselves, then this is the intensive for you!
Let’s read some sci-fi short stories and graphic novels that are part of this Afrofuturism movement. We will examine art, watch music videos, movie shorts, and game trailers. You will create your own comic books and artwork after studying the Afrofuturism artists, musicians and writers such as Janelle Monae, Hebru Brantley, Sun Ra, Turtel Onli, and Octavia Butler. Join me as we explore the exciting genre of Afrofuturism.

All aboard for the Cardboard Boat Regatta! Have you ever dreamt of building and sailing away on the boat of your dreams? Build and test new products out of paper and get ready to race your cardboard boat using the engineering and design process. Your creativity knows no bounds!

Come learn the fun art of crochet! Students will learn the history of crocheting, the healing properties of crochet, basic foundation stitches of chain, single, double, half double and treble stitch. Projects include a beanie hat, scarf, and arugami (the art of crocheting small stuff animals).

A most terrible crime has taken place in the halls of our beloved school, and it is up to you to help put the clues together!
Have you ever been interested in what goes on behind the scenes when solving a crime? It's all about forensic science, and in this intensive, you get to explore the math and science behind 'who dun it.' If you have ever wondered how the evidence gets authenticated, this course is for you. We will combine the sciences of biology, physics, chemistry, and psychology with math, observation skills, critical thinking, and deductive reasoning to nab the culprit.

Calling all aspiring journalists! In this intensive, we will be exploring the science of journalism and reporting on the middle school intensive experience.
From hard news to features, you will learn about the different types of newspaper articles and the structures involved in writing. Throughout this intensive, students will construct a publication all about the Maumee Valley Middle School Winter Intensive Program. Students will explore different information gathering and reporting types, including video and audio recording, newspaper design, podcasting, and more. This is a great intensive for students looking to explore the world of news, media technology, and explore bias and fair reporting guidelines.

Come use your storytelling skills and your flair for the dramatic to create and film a fairytale-inspired telenovela (soap opera). Have you heard of free libraries? A Free Library is a “take a book, return a book” free book exchange. They come in many shapes and sizes, but the most common version is a small wooden box of books. Anyone may take a book or bring a book to share. This intensive will consist of designing, building, and placing free libraries in our community.

Do you have unlimited cash? No? Cool! Come learn how to get a job or start your first business as a teenager. In this class, we’ll learn how to find a job and decide if it’s a good fit for you. We will also explore ways teenagers can start their own businesses, stretch a paycheck, and create more opportunities. Because life can’t be all work and no play, we will also build teamwork, communication, and strategic thinking skills through cooperative games.

Learn the art of bullet journaling and meditative doodling!
The start of a New Year is the perfect time to start a bullet journal. A bullet journal allows people to record achievements, goals, thoughts, inspiration, and reflections in an organized and creative way. Users can make entries of daily, weekly, and monthly progress toward their goals. Fun markers, pens, stickers and decorative tapes make the process especially enjoyable and exciting. We will also talk about meditative doodling and how a simple sketch a day can help keep anxiety away.
Journals, writing and decorating supplies included, but you are welcome to bring in personalized items of your own!

Why is seafood so popular in some areas, while in others beef or pork take the lead? How intertwined are culture and food? Let’s explore these things together as we learn about different cultures and recreate popular dishes from around the world.

Through the leadership academy, students will work together to explore who they are as leaders among the Maumee Valley community. This includes learning about their specific personality traits, personal strengths and challenges, and how they can become strong leaders among their peers. Students will also learn about the qualities, habits, and practices of other successful leaders, along with completing activities such as personality assessments and reflection exercises that revolve around the Leadership Academy’s five pillars: character, commitment, competence, strength, and adaptability. Through the application of these pillars, students will work together to resolve real-life conflicts relevant to the student experience with the goal of promoting positive change.

Go under the sea with Broadway veteran Michael Lang! In this workshop, you will explore everything you need to know about musical theater from audition to final curtain. Using Disney’s “The Little Mermaid,” you will learn dance routines, acting scenes, and selected vocal numbers that will all culminate in a mini-production for your friends and family.

A midway at a fair is where carnival games and amusement rides cluster. What role does math play in games and rides? What are the chances you will win? How are rides designed? We will examine a variety of carnival games and rides to explore the math behind them. We will then design and present an MV Midway to our peers.

Are you a change-maker? Come, be brave and explore who you are while examining our history of race in America. Let’s examine and break down social barriers and limitations to empower and free individuals to be themselves. Let’s work together to make a difference in the world we live in today. We will analyze primary sources and visuals, listen to songs, watch documentaries, read Stamped: Racism, Antiracism and You as well as various other nonfiction and fiction, during which we will examine identity, race, racism, bias, privilege, stereotypes, and antiracism. You will create a personal book cover, write your own story of race, culture, and identity, and design an entry to the #usvshate challenge.

“Sweeeeeet Caroline…..” Ever get a catchy tune stuck in your head? Have a love for lyrics and music? Then this is the intensive for you! You will get the chance to learn about basic song structure and the breakdown of a song, and how to put all of the elements together. Along with studying music theory, you’ll take the song writing process and apply it to a song of your own.

This intensive will consist of training in all aspects of the sport including leadership, statistics and confidence building. The curriculum will help students develop and master skills to play the game of volleyball with excellence. In addition, students will understand the importance of being a team player as well as a little bit of the math that goes with it.

For 7th grade students, this intensive will explore different mediums of visual art. Students will create art projects with Mrs. Glover that they can take home at the conclusion of the class.

In this course, students will take a no nonsense look into the history of the Black Lives Matter Movement. What sparked the movement? Why is there a demand for change in the criminal justice system? By using credible sources such as PBS, NPR and Newsela, students will have a better understanding of the civil rights movement of their generation through journaling, discussion and creating art. It’s the 21st century and history is happening. Are you ready to be a part of it?

This course will focus on personal artistic expression and creativity. Using a variety of artistic mediums, students will work on creative exploration and developing a personal style. This course celebrates the individual and focuses on the positive influence art brings into our lives. There will be unlimited opportunities for artistic freedom and experimentation with different materials in a supportive and inspiring environment.
