Maumee Valley Country Day School is seeking a Mandarin Chinese Instructor to teach beginning to advanced levels of Mandarin to high school students. The ideal candidate is an enthusiastic and nurturing educator with experience working with a diverse student body and implementing culturally-responsive teaching practices at the secondary level.  

A Maumee Valley teacher is a guide who orchestrates learning for students in ways that are engaging, challenging, and relevant. The successful candidate is a resourceful teacher who utilizes a range of pedagogical techniques in order to reach all learners and forge strong relationships with students and families. 

This position reports to the Head of Upper School and collaborates closely with the World Language department, Upper School faculty, and Student Support Team.  

Key Responsibilities and Duties:
  • Teach two to three sections of Mandarin Chinese (beginner to advanced levels)
  • Manage a student load of between 10 and 20 students
  • Provide translating support for communications with parents of Chinese students in the boarding program
  • Support the school vision, mission, and DEI work

Skills and Competencies: 
  • Teach Mandarin Chinese to secondary school students. Implement strategies for teaching listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in simplified and traditional Chinese characters
  • Understand the standards and proficiency guidelines of the American Council on Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL)
  • Implement curriculum and instruction at the secondary level. Develop instructional materials and lesson plans. Translate lesson plans into student-centered learning experiences that maximize teaching time.
  • Create a safe and collaborative learning environment.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of a diverse group of learners. 

  • A degree in Chinese or a related field
  • Demonstration of successful experience teaching Chinese language from beginning to advanced levels
  • Fluency in Mandarin Chinese, native or near-native
  • Must be willing and able to secure an Ohio Permanent Non-Tax certificate or Professional Teaching license. The school will support you in obtaining this once hired. However, it must be secured within the first six months of employment for compliance purposes.
