UPPER SCHOOL PHYSICS TEACHER

Position opening: Upper Physics Teacher
Type: Full-time faculty (185 days paid over 12 months)

Maumee Valley Country Day School is seeking a resourceful and innovative physics teacher who uses a range of pedagogical techniques, including the modeling approach, to reach all learners. An ideal candidate has experience teaching innovative physics courses with real-world applications to a wide range of diverse learners.

This position reports to the Head of the Upper School and collaborates closely with all Upper School faculty, as well as the cross-divisional Science Department. As a full-time faculty member, the position offers all benefits afforded to full-time employees, including but not limited to, comprehensive health benefits, paid time off, paid life insurance, tuition remission, and professional development.

Key Responsibilities and Duties:
    • Teach a full load of high school-level courses in the science department, including physics, AP physics, and science electives
    • Manage a student load of between 60 and 80 students
    • Nurture and support an advisee group of between 8 and 12 students
    • Participate in the life of the school by attending athletic, arts, fundraising, and other school events
    • Attend faculty and department meetings and other meetings as needed
    • Chaperone school functions, such as dances and school trips, as needed
    • Participate on committees and task forces as needed
    • Mentor student clubs and activities as needed
    • Maintain open lines of communication with students, parents, and colleagues
    • Meet performance goals established as part of the annual performance planning process or as the result of organizational planning
    • Actively engage in personal and professional work in support of the school’s diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives
    • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor
Skills and Competencies:
    • Experience and training in modeling instruction in physics
    • Sense of humor and demonstrated success working with teenagers
    • Knowledge and experience teaching a range of high school science classes from 9th grade to Advanced Placement
    • Flexible and adaptable; open to teaching different science courses as needed
    • Familiarity with experiential and inquiry-based learning practices
    • Ability to differentiate instruction
    • Experience developing innovative curricula with a backward design framework, such as Understanding by Design
    • Ability to collaborate within and between departments to foster interdisciplinary learning
    • Able to maximize the advantages of a technology-rich learning environment
Credentials:
    • Experience teaching high school science classes
    • Independent school teaching experience preferred
    • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field required; master’s degree, relevant coursework, or relevant professional experience preferred
Faculty: Must be willing and able to secure an Ohio Permanent Non-Tax certificate or a professional teaching license. The school will support you in obtaining this once hired. However, it must be secured within the first six months of employment for compliance purposes.
