ENGLISH FOR SPEAKERS OF OTHER LANGUAGES (ESOL) INSTRUCTOR

Maumee Valley Country Day School is seeking a dynamic educator who orchestrates learning for students in ways that are engaging, challenging, and relevant. The successful candidate is a resourceful teacher who uses a range of pedagogical techniques in order to reach all learners and forge strong relationships with students and families.

This position reports to the Head of the Upper School and collaborates closely with the Director of International Programs, the cross-divisional English Department, and the Student Support Team. The ESOL teacher is responsible for teaching and supporting our non-native English-speaking Upper School students who are still building their English language skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. 
The ESOL program follows a caseload, portfolio model where the teacher meets individually and in small groups with students to focus on lessons and support where students need the most help in language acquisition. Charting and monitoring the progress of each student is critical to the success of the program. The teacher also works closely with classroom teachers to help them plan and modify lessons to appropriately build the English skills of non-native speakers.

Key Responsibilities and Duties:
    • Teach one section of Upper School English
    • Plan, teach, assess, adjust, re-teach, and re-assess students in order to document growth and achievement
    • Accommodate varied learning styles and developmental levels within the classroom/program
    • Be knowledgeable in current theories and methodologies in the area of language acquisition and be confident in using this knowledge for the benefit of the student
    • Attend staff development opportunities in the area of ESOL and be willing to dispense the information to school staff
    • Consult with parents, colleagues, and other appropriate individuals or agencies concerned with student achievement, behavior, and development
    • Maintain individual student records, which will include assessment scores, language surveys, correspondence with parents as well as classroom teachers, and samples of the student’s work
    • Help the ESOL students gain an understanding of the American culture, especially those new to the English-speaking country, and help the mainstream students gain an understanding of and respect for other cultures
    • Meet performance goals established as part of the annual performance planning process or as the result of organizational planning
    • Actively engage in personal and professional work in support of the school’s diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives
    • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor

Credentials:
The successful candidate has the following qualifications:
    • Bachelor’s degree and ESOL certification in relevant fields is required. Master’s degree is preferred.
    • Experience in teaching ESOL
    • Previous teaching in a private school is desired, not required.

Faculty: Must be willing and able to secure an Ohio Permanent Non-Tax certificate or a professional teaching license. The school will support you in obtaining this once hired. However, it must be secured within the first six months of employment for compliance purposes.
