Junior Wins Ohio Northern University Poetry Contest

The Department of English at Ohio Northern University announced that MVCDS junior Annie Williams won the inaugural ONU Single Poem Broadside contest for her poem “[separation anxiety]”! They received over 100 submissions from juniors and seniors in high school, both national and international, and they said the quality of the poems these students composed was remarkable..
Broadside contest judge Dr. Jen Moore writes that “‘[separation anxiety]’ is striking in its careful balance of intimacy and estrangement (‘the lake between us blossoms into an ocean,/all salt and unknowing’), as well as in its seductive imagery and rhythmic impulse: ‘there is no saving/with all this space, this canyon of doubt. drive me/ over its cliff. let me feel all of this on my skin.’ Annie was able to capture in this brief lyric what Barbara Guest calls “a beautiful balance between the hidden and the open.”

Annie will receive broadside publication of her poem, 10 copies of the broadside (typeset and printed on a letterpress printer by professor Melissa Eddings-Mancuso of the Ohio Northern University Department of Art & Design), the English Department Talent Award, and $100.
