MV Students in grades 1 through 5 have been working on creating a decorative heart or a puzzle activity as a sign of their friendship with penpals in Guatemala. Our mailing left the United States on Tuesday! Students at SewHope, our penpal school, just started their school year.

When the packages arrive, they will be able to finish the heart artwork and then keep it as a souvenir. We’re excited to see what the finished product will look like!

Maumee Valley’s penpal connection began during the 2019-20 school year through MV parent Cecilia Chaudhary who works with SewHope School in Guatemala. Each year, students assemble three mailings and write about a variety of topics, such as holidays, people they admire, and favorite things.

This unique experience allows students to use Spanish in a real-life context, connect with new friends in another country, and develop cultural appreciation in meaningful ways.
