Matt Buchanan
President
Trustee since 2011
A current parent of two Maumee Valley students, Matt is a registered patent attorney and founding partner at Buchanan Van Tuinen LLC, a global intellectual property law firm head- quartered in Toledo. Matt teaches patent law and strategy to entrepreneurship students at the University of Michigan and to patent professionals from all around the world. He earned a B.S. in Microbiology from The Ohio State University and a Masters in Microbiology and Immunology from the Medical College of Ohio. He earned his J.D. from the University of Toledo.

Laurie Julius Avery '88
Secretary

Trustee since 2014
Laurie Avery is a 1988 graduate of MVCDS. She and her husband Rick are the parents of three MVCDS students. She is a partner in the Toledo Office of Reminger Co., LPA where she focuses her law practice on the defense of employers in wrongful termination and discrimination claims as well as professionals in the defense of malpractice claims. Laurie earned her JD from Case Western Reserve University School of Law and her BA from the University of Rochester.

Amy Yustick
Vice President
Trustee since 2013
Amy and husband Robert are the parents of current MVCDS students, Bryce, Paige, and Blake. She currently serves as CFO for Champion Laboratories, a leading automotive filtration supplier and has more than 25 years of experience in the automotive industry. Prior to joining Champion, she held various roles in finance, IT, and strategy at Ford Motor Company, Bosch, Timken and Dana. She received her BA in Economics and Art History from the University of Michigan and her MBA in Finance from the Katz Graduate School of Business. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with family and friends at her lake house in Michigan.
Rick Kaser
Treasurer

Trustee since 2012
Rick is a Senior Vice President for Morgan Stanley. He received his Bachelors degree from Miami University in Accounting and Finance. Rick is a current parent and serves on various committees of the board.






Diana Block ’91
Vice President

Trustee since 2016
Diana Block is executive vice president of Block Communications Inc. Before moving to Toledo to join the parent company last summer, Diana worked at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette as president and co-publisher. In 2012 she began teaching business communications at Carnegie Mellon’s Tepper School of Business. Diana has a BA in English from Yale University, a MA in English from the University of Virginia, and an MBA from Carnegie Mellon University.



Dr. Amanda Bryant-Friedrich
Trustee since 2015
Amanda is the mother of two MVCDS students, Klaus '20 and Cornelia '29. She is the Associate Professor of Medicinal Chemistry at the University of Toledo/Medical Center. She is also the Director of International Pharmaceutical Sciences Graduate Student Recruitment and Retention. Amanda was a Winterim Independent Study advisor this year and was a member of the search committee for the Head of Middle School position.


Mary Fedderke
Trustee since 2012
Mary is an alumni parent of two children and serves as the Director of Institutional Advancement for The Toledo Zoological Society. She graduated Cum Laude from Wheaton College and is an active member of the Northwest Ohio Community, serving on many boards, including Toledo Area Planned Giving Council and Toledo Museum of Art President's Council.






Mary Lynch Jarrell
Trustee since 2013
Mary spent her undergraduate years at Northwestern University and received her law degree at The George Washington University in Washington, DC. She practiced corporate law at Arter & Hadden in Cleveland, and later as in-house counsel for Compass Group USA, Inc. Currently Mary devotes her time to volunteer work and raising a family. She and her husband Paul, the Chief Administrative Officer with OI, are parents of two MVCDS students.


Amy Rizik
President of the Parent Association

Amy has a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education, and a Masters Degree in Teaching Reading and Language Arts. Amy and her husband David have four children, three of them are current students at Maumee Valley. Amy is a dedicated volunteer at the school. She has led Destination Imagination teams and chaired the school Carnival. Amy and her family enjoy spending time together and are active in their church.
Emily (Xin) Tian
Trustee since 2016
Emily (Xin) Tian is the mother of Jack '17 and Kimmi '23. She and her husband, Michael Zhao own a plastic products company, ICO Products/ICOMold, headquartered in Holland, Ohio. She has lived in Toledo since 1995 and has a Master of Science from Bowling Green State University.







Alexandra Bowe DeRosa ‘82

Alex DeRosa’82, is the mother of Chris ‘16 and Charlotte '20. Alexandra is a visiting Instructor and Composition Fellow in English at the University of Toledo. Educated at Bennington College and the City University of New York, she has taught English in New York City and locally. Currently she is working on the MVCDS community garden project and has served on the Alumni Council for several years.





Areka Foster, PC, ATR
Trustee since 2013
A current parent at Maumee Valley, Areka is a licensed clinical counselor and registered art therapist at The victory Center, Polly Fox Academy and in the private practice. She is the co-founder of Growing 2 Give Garden, a non-profit that grows and donates fresh produce to area food banks and soup kitchens. She holds two Masters degrees, one in Guidance and Counseling (BGSU), and the other in Art Therapy and Counseling (Ursuline College).


Dr. Maneesha Pandey
Trustee since 2015
Mother of Mihir Joshi '20 and Avi Joshi '23, Maneesha is a deputy coroner and forensic pathologist in the Lucas County Coroner's Office. She is also an assistant professor in the Health Sciences department at The University of Toledo. Maneesha and her husband, Ajay, chaired the Top Chef fundraising event.


Andy Weiner
Trustee since 2017
A current parent of three Maumee Valley students, Andy is an Associate Vice President with Morgan Stanley. Before moving to Toledo in 2008, he spent 32 years in New England where he met his wife Sarah, originally from Toledo. He graduated from St. Andrews School, Barrington, RI, and from Unity College in Maine. He subsequently provided consulting services to the commercial banking and lending industry before discovering his passion for working with individual people and families. Andy also serves as Vice Chair on the Board of Directors for Sunset Retirement Communities, a local non-profit, and is the Chair of the Investment Committee.
Vallie Bowman English
Trustee since 2017
Vallie Bowman-English received her Law Degree from the Ohio Northern University College of Law in 1995. She is married to Common Pleas Court Judge Ian English and they have one son.
Vallie is a past president and current member of the Ohio Association of Municipal / County Court Clerks. She is also the Chair of the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council. Vallie became the first minority President of the Toledo Bar Association in its 138 year history. She is the past Chair of the Susan G. Komen of NW Ohio Grants Peer Review Panel and a current member of the board. She is the Chair of the Lucas County Democratic Party’s Central committee, and has been appointed to the Ohio Supreme Court‘s Judicial Family Network Advisory Board.
Paula Grieb, DNP, RN
Trustee since 2015
Paula spent her undergraduate years at Spring Arbor University and received her Doctorate in Nursing Practice at The Ohio State University.  She currently works as the Chief Nursing Officer/Vice President Patient Care Services at ProMedica Bay Park Hospital and the Chief Nursing Officer/Vice President Patient Care Services at ProMedica Fostoria Community Hospital.  Paula is a member of the Toledo Area Organization of Nurse Executives and was an Excellence in Nursing Leadership Nominee in 2009 for The Toledo Hospital.
Brian Reddy
Trustee since 2013
Born and raised in Dublin, Ireland, Brian emigrated to the United States in 1989. Brian received his Bachelor of Science in Finance from Canisius College and his JD, cum laude, from the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Law. He is in private practice and concentrates in civil litigation. He and his wife, Lisa, are the parents of three current students and Lisa is a dedicated school volunteer. Brian’s family has hosted two international students.
Mr. Yang (Apollo) Zhang
Trustee since 2015
Yang Zhang is the father of Richard Zhang '18 and resident of the Dayal House, Apollo lives in Beijing, China where he is the owner of Toyomoto Tire.  He has traveled to more than 30 countries and has experience with industrial project planning, manufacturing, product marketing, brand building and finance.






Judge Jeff Helmick

Trustee since 2009
Currently chair of the Buildings & Grounds committee, Jeff was a principal in the law firm Gamso, Helmick & Hoolahan until his recent appointment by the President as a U.S. District Court Judge. He graduated from the University of Michigan and received his J.D. from The Ohio State University's Moritz College of Law. Former board service includes Pemberville Boys Ranch, Toledo Rowing Club and David's House Compassion, Inc.
Ann Stranahan
Trustee Emerita
Ann, a dedicated member of this community, served as President of the Board in the 1980s. She created and produced the documentary on Maumee Valley for Toledo Stories and wrote the school's 125 Year History. Ann is an author, poet and humanitarian. She is a past parent, current grandparent, and strong advocate for Maumee Valley.



Georgia Welles
Trustee Emerita
Georgia is a community leader and has provided support for a large variety of non-profit organizations across the country, including Maumee Valley Country Day School. She has worn many hats for the school, including parent, grandparent, trustee, and president of the board. She continues to mentor the administration of the school to ensure the longevity of Maumee Valley for generations to come.
