Primary: Grades 1 & 2

Maumee Valley Primary teachers understand that no two minds learn in the same way. We intentionally keep class sizes small, and teachers utilize skill-based groupings and flexible instruction approaches – all mainstays of a Maumee Valley education – in an effort to stay in tune to the individual needs and responses of students.

Building a strong educational foundation begins with skill development. We take teaching the “how” to the next level by exploring the “why” so students develop a stronger base and deeper understanding. Our theme-based learning concept incorporates all aspects of their studies – including science, art, music and language – and encourages learning through discovery, self-exploration and problem solving. Themes range from Simple Machine to City Planning and beyond.

Integrated, thematic curriculum helps students see connections and makes their learning more meaningful. The faculty’s talent for creating cross-curricular connections is apparent in the first and second grade. Students fully discover experiential learning through broad thematic units that encompass multiple subjects at once.

A social studies unit on Native American culture, for example, provides the basis for lessons in literature and research and is enhanced by the study of traditional Native American songs, dances, and art.

Town Meetings

Lower School students and faculty gather as a community each Tuesday morning in the Blakey Resource Center. Weekly meetings are made up of local business presentations, including the Toledo Art Museum and the Toledo Zoo, general all school and Lower School announcements, and student presentations. Students are encouraged to ask questions, announce achievements and athletic results, read poems, and give educational presentations to their peers. Town meetings give Lower School students the opportunity to present in front of a larger, supportive audience of friends and teachers.
