A reception will be held on Friday, April 15, 2016, 5:30 – 7:00 pm in the Wolfe Gallery
Denis was born & raised in the suburbs of Chicago. After earning a Master’s degree in Business Management, he moved to Toledo in 1972 and spent the next forty years holding various financial positions in a corporate business environment. He created his first oil painting at the age of eleven, but had only painted a few canvases until six years ago when he retired. He is now able to pursue his passion and love of Art. Although he has no formal education in Art, his retirement allows him the time to visit museums, research artists’ techniques and styles, and become involved in the local art community. As an artist, it is his aspiration to capture a “moment in time” on his canvas. That moment could be a deep thought, a curiosity, or just a simple feeling. Whether a portrait, a person, or just people in general, he hopes that he can capture that moment and then share it with everyone who views his work.

Rachel spent time doing independent study in several cities in Italy and Brazil. She believes that paintings should speak clearly and forcefully for themselves. Her goal is to communicate what she sees, whether in a face, a figure, a landscape, or a still life. She tries to do so in a way that is immediate and moving. Her work is representational because she is interested in attempting to resolve the inherent paradox between the representation of space and the integrity of the two-dimensional surface.
