MVCDS Senior Earns U.S. Presidential Scholar Honor

MVCDS senior, Rick K., is one of eight students in northwest Ohio who were chosen as U.S. Presidential Scholar candidates - an honor give to the nation’s most distinguished graduating seniors. Of the 3.5 million high school students expected to graduate at the end of the academic year nationwide, only 4,000 of the top students are selected as candidates, according to a Department of Education news release.
Rick’s qualifications were described in a Toledo Blade article about the area Presidential Scholar candidates: As a freshman, Rick started a student investment bank to allow large, well-funded clubs a place to invest their money, along with a space for smaller clubs to get loans to jump-start their activities.

“In a regular economy, you have something to connect borrowers and lenders and that helps the economy grow,” he said, “but we didn’t really see that in our school.”

The bank helped get the school’s Science Olympiad club competing right away, along with guaranteeing the investing clubs’ principal to allow for risk-free investment. “They had a lot of faith in us because we had a lot of planning behind it,” he said.

Rick will study finance at the University of Pennsylvania.
