Sam Thomas '23 finds silver lining in sculpting during quarantine

The Maumee Valley student will have his artwork for sale this weekend at the Toledo Zoo.
Sam Thomas '23 said he found a positive during quarantine during last school year.

The junior has been sculpting since he was 5-years-old.

"All I need to sculpt besides the materials is a lot of time," he said. "It was a bonus during a pretty terrible time in our world, so I found a silver lining, so to speak, and I was able to sculpt a lot."

Thomas will have a booth at the Toledo Zoo this weekend during an art show that will feature 80 booths. The is from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 7, and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 8.

"The art program at Maumee Valley and Mrs. Kowalski has been extremely helpful in helping me prioritize and develop," Thomas said. "It's what I'm passionate about. Maumee Valley has helped me in my everyday skills."

The nearly 200 pieces that Thomas has created since 2020 will be for sale at the "Sam's Sculptures" booth.

The size of the pieces range from 2-inches to about a foot tall and cost between $10 and $350, Thomas said.

Thomas said that each piece took between eight and 10 hours to complete and included sculpting, baking, and painting.

"My main goal is to get the experience, get my name out there, and to get a little attention as I start looking at college," he said.
