Six seniors named 2023 National Merit Semifinalists

Congratulations to six MV seniors for being named 2023 National Merit Semifinalists. More students were named Semifinalists from Maumee Valley Country Day School than any other Toledo-area high school. The students are Sharon Deng, Eli Marx, Calvin McCullumsmith, Tameem Zaidat, Elliott Zajac, and Oliver Zajac.
They are among the highest scoring entrants in Ohio and among 16,000 students — the top one third of the 50,000 highest scores — announced this month by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). Each student is now eligible to advance to Finalist standing next spring; 7,250 finalists will be selected to receive scholarships or awards totaling $28 million.

Well done, Sharon, Eli, Calvin, Tameem, Elliott, and Oliver! (Watch the 13abc.com story on these students)

To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition. About 95 percent of the Semifinalists are expected to attain Finalist standing, and about half of the Finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar® title.

To qualify as a Finalist, a Semifinalist must:
  1. continue to meet all requirements for participation in the competition
  2. be enrolled in the last year of high school and plan to enroll full-time in college the following fall, or be enrolled in the first year of college if grades 9 through 12 were completed in three years or less;
  3. be fully endorsed for Finalist standing and recommended for a National Merit Scholarship by the high school principal (or school official designated by the principal);
  4. have a record of consistently very high academic performance in all of grades 9 through 12 and in any college courses taken;
  5. complete the NMSC® Online Scholarship Application (OSA) with all information requested;
  6. take an authorized administration of the SAT® or ACT®, earn scores that confirm performance on the PSAT/NMSQT® taken for program entry, and arrange for the National Merit Program to receive an official score report of the SAT or ACT taken; and
  7. provide any additional documentation and information that NMSC requests.
