6 students chosen for art, writing awards

Six Maumee Valley students have been honored for their writing and artistic abilities in the 2023 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards regional competition.
In writing, Sharon Deng '23 received multiple awards. She was chosen as an American Voices Award nominee, an honor reserved for only the top five student essays in the region. She also received two Gold Keys and two honorable mentions. Also earning an honorable mention for her writing was Nicole Wang ’25.

In art categories, Helen Yan '24 was named an American Visions Award nominee (given to only the top five artists in a region) as well as three Gold Keys. Earning Silver Keys were Karen Chen '24 and Alexander Ni '24. And Sam Thomas '23 earned a Silver Key in the art portfolio competition and two honorable mentions.

By earning American Voices and American Visions awards, Sharon and Helen now move forward in national competitions for further awards and honors.

The awards are conducted annually under the auspices of the national nonprofit Alliance for Young Artists & Writers. In celebration of this year’s regional award winners, the Fort Wayne Museum of Art (FWMoA) will host a free open house celebration Feb. 19 from noon-5 p.m.

The exhibition of awarded work will be on display at FWMoA Feb. 11-April 8 in the museum’s galleries at 311 E. Main Street. General admission is free for FWMoA members, $10 adults, $8 students and seniors 65+, and $25 for families. General admission is free for everyone on Thursdays 5-8 p.m.
