The creative abilities of Maumee Valley students are well known to competition judges. Our students have won the competition in four of the past five years. In addition to the drawing by Alex, an acrylic painting by Paige Yustick '23 and a drawing (prisma colored pencils) by Chiaki Chen '23 were selected as finalists and will be on display in a special exhibition through April 2. Chiaki's drawing "Lotso" is receiving an award from Bowling Green State University's Department of Art.

Since 1983, the annual competition honors artistic excellence as demonstrated by area high school students. High schools and student artists in Lucas, Fulton, Williams, Defiance, and Sandusky counties, as well as parts of Wood County, are invited to participate.

Alex, Paige, and Chiaki will be among the students honored Sunday (March 12) at the Toledo Museum of Art in the new Robert C. and Susan Savage Community Gallery. The public reception is from 2-4 p.m. with remarks in the Little Theater beginning at 3 p.m.

Alex’s work titled “Concentration” will be displayed in the Capitol for one year. He finished runner-up last year, and his artwork was placed in the office of Congresswoman Kaptur.
