Alumna Loraine Lynn ’06 is the opening artist in the 2024-2025 season at the Wolfe Gallery. The show is titled “This Yarn Altered My Brain Chemistry” and runs Aug. 19 to Oct. 4. The reception is Sept. 20.

Artist biography

Loraine Lynn is an artist lurking around the Midwest, spinning colorful tales with whatever material strikes her fancy. With a background in glassblowing, ceramics, and fiber, she follows curiosity to satisfy her creative appetite.

Loraine holds undergraduate and graduate degrees in glass, sculpture, and 3D studies from the Cleveland Institute of Art and Bowling Green State University. She has exhibited work internationally in Ireland, Italy, and South Korea, as well as across the United States. Lynn has been awarded residencies at the Vermont Studio Center and ChaNorth. In 2022, she was invited to participate in the second edition of the FRONT International Triennial for Contemporary Art.

When she’s not in the studio, look for her among the trees, foraging for mushrooms and spotting cool birds.

Artist Statement

Rules were meant to be broken. It’s more interesting that way, yeah?

I’m a curious mind that dabbles in tactile meditations, letting my failures lead me down unexpected paths. I was raised by craft, but destined to ignore its rigid methods. I make mistakes. Lots of them. Sometimes over and over and over. The best results come from Messing around and finding out.

My work spews color and texture. It has no chill. It’s not that serious. Just a hit of dopamine slapped on the wall. An amuse bouche for weary visual palettes looking for a little spice.

Want a break from the humdrum dreary of everyday life? I got you covered.

Fluid materials I can shape and respond to as they change are my go-to. Nothing is static. My artwork is never quite “finished.” This is where you, dear audience, come in.

My creations are like a sentence that slowly tapers off. A slew of thoughts flood in to alter it, and new meaning is formed in the awkward silence of contemplation. Your participation completes the sentence. Makes the work whole. Collaboration is a wonderful thing, isn’t it?

At the moment yarn is my weapon of choice. With it I weave, knot, and string together joyful compositions. A loosey-goosey architecture of loopy-loops and shag you can really dig your fingers into.

If you want to have a good time, shut off your brain and take a look. It’ll be good for you.
