Upper Intermediate SOLVE Team Wins Two Competitions

Since October, the Upper Intermediate SOLVE Team has been working hard to find the solution to a very important problem on the Maumee Valley campus: bird strikes. Students observed that a number of birds have had fatal collisions with the glass connector which links the Smead Building to the rest of MVCDS. Through their research, the 5th and 6th grade students learned that birds see a food source on the other side of the connector and don’t realize there is a wall of glass in their way. The SOLVE Team eagerly went to work to find a solution to the problem, with the added component that their work be submitted to two national science competitions.
Cimran Naik ͗22, Yusuf Daboul ͗21, Bryce Maenle ͗21, and Zakaria Maaieh ͗21 monitored a section of campus and recorded bird strikes on a regular basis. In the late fall they noticed a large amount of strikes, and Maumee Valley parent/ornithologist Teresa De La Fuente came to campus to offer guidance on what to do, what to look for, and how to document the issue. With the guidance of Brian Soash, the SOLVE Team’s advisor, the students researched and tested various solutions.

Yusuf, Bryce, and Zakaria entered their work into eCYBERMISSION, one of several STEM initiatives offered by the Army Educational Outreach Program, and were selected as First Place Winners in the state of Ohio for 6th grade students. The eCYBERMISSION competition challenged students in grades six through nine to develop a solution to a real-world problem in their local community. Yusuf, Bryce, and Zakaria will be awarded with a savings bond for winning this precious award.

Cimran, the only 5th grade student on the team, entered The DuPont Challenge Science Writing Competition and won the top score in the Honorable Mention category with her presentation “When Birds are too Vain: Birds vs. Windows.” To enter the DuPont Challenge students were required to conduct background research, construct a plan for testing their research, observe and gather information, and analyze and interpret their data. Finished projects were presented using text and original images and finalists were interviewed by DuPont via Skype for final Judging.

Congratulations to Cimran Naik, Yusuf Daboul, Bryce Maenle, and Zakaria Maaieh for their accomplishments in both the eCYBERMISSION and DuPont competitions.
