Congratulations to 12 MV student-athletes for being selected to participate in a conference today focused on young athletes and mental health.

Only sophomores and juniors from a few select area schools were invited to send athletes. Attending were (front row): Cranston Bannister, Claire Drerup, Mira Varshney, Julia Burke, Penny Weiner, Layan Ridi, and Yutian Zhou. Back row: Oliver Dunn, Harlan Poupard, Ty Lewis, and Tarek Yassine. (Selected but unable to attend was Imaan Zafar.)

The MV students are all members of the school’s Leadership Academy, and many are captains of varsity sports teams. The half-day event at the Imagination Station was titled “The Athlete Mental Health Summit: Changing the Culture of High School Sports.”

The event brought together sought-after speakers, college athlete panelists, mental health specialists, and resources in one arena to produce a positive impact on high school sports.

Among the speakers is Niki McCoy, who will speak about how she incorporates mental health into her coaching and mentoring activities. Niki also is the director of residential life and the director of the girls’ basketball program at Maumee Valley.
