The MVCDS Speech Team has had an outstanding year to date. They will compete almost every weekend from the middle of November till the first weekend in March.
The MVCDS team can compete in nine categories, and they consistently bring in trophies for several of the nine. When it came time to qualify for states, nine of the eleven students qualified for the state tournament and won four different categories. The team placed 3rd in the Toledo district.
This past weekend the students competed in the national qualifying tournament. Five MVCDS team members qualified for the national tournament in Texas this summer. Overall the team placed 2nd in western Ohio.

Two Seniors are Finalists in National Merit Scholarship Program
Maumee Valley students continue to excel in the national arena. Two seniors, Julia Xiong and Evan Heritage, received notification that they are Finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program. National Merit recognizes outstanding student performance on the PSAT/NMSQT® test taken during the junior year. Of the 1.6 million entrants who take the PSAT/NMSQT® test, National Merit selects 15,000 students for Finalist standing, and approximately half of the Finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship. We wish Julia and Evan well as they enter the final stage of the National Merit Scholarship selection process.
Congratulations to 8th grader Gustavo Caillaux! His short story "Lost in the Amazon" will be featured in the upcoming issue of The Daphne Review. The editor of this highly selective literary journal writes that she is "thrilled" to include Gustavo's story because he possesses "a powerful artistic voice." High praise! Congrats, Gustavo!
