College Counseling

Preparation for the next educational journey

The Department of College Counseling within the Upper School serves a crucial role in guiding and supporting students as they navigate the complex process of preparing for and applying to college. The department’s primary purpose is to assist students and families in making informed decisions about their post-secondary education and career paths.

Maumee Valley students earn very high marks in the competitive college admissions process. In fact, 100 percent of graduates go on to four-year, highly-selective institutions. Each student works closely with the department directors beginning their freshman year to establish the foundation for creating a four-year portfolio that reflects the scope of each individual and his or her many talents and interests.

Advantages of MV’s college counseling:

  • More than 50 admissions officers visit Maumee Valley each fall to conduct information sessions and meet individually with prospective students.
  • Admissions officers from selective colleges visit for our Essay Writing Workshop for juniors.
  • Alumni parents and local community members will conduct interviews with Maumee Valley students for selective universities.
  • Naviance is available for students, parents, and alumni.
  • Annual college tours are led by MV faculty and staff during spring break.

Key features and functions of the department:

  • Individualized guidance: Our counselors work closely with students on a one-on-one basis to understand their interests, strengths, and goals. They provide personalized advice and guidance tailored to each student’s academic, extracurricular, and personal profile.
  • College exploration: The department helps students explore a range of college options, taking into consideration factors such as academic programs, campus culture, location, and size.
  • Application support: Our counselors assist students in navigating the college application process, helping them understand requirements, deadlines, and necessary documentation. We offer workshops on writing personal statements, preparing for interviews, and other aspects of the application.
  • Testing and standardized test prep: The department provides information about standardized tests (such as SAT or ACT) to help students prepare for these exams. They also can recommend test preparation resources, strategies, and timelines for taking these tests.
  • Financial aid and scholarships: Our counselors guide students and their families through the financial aid application process, providing information about grants, scholarships, and loans. They also can assist in identifying scholarship opportunities and help students understand the cost of attending different colleges.
  • Transcript and recommendation letters: The department assists students in preparing transcripts and securing letters of recommendation from teachers and other mentors.
  • Transition support: Our counselors often help students with the transition from high school to college, addressing concerns, providing resources, and offering support during this significant life change.
  • Parental involvement: The department organizes workshops and informational sessions for parents, keeping them informed about the college application process and how they can support their children.
  • Data and trends analysis: Our counselors are constantly analyzing data related to college admissions trends, acceptance rates, and the success of former students to provide valuable insights for current students.
