  • What is an independent school?

    The Freedom of Independent Education
Independent schools are generally free to define their mission, program, and values without oversight from the government or a diocese. As an independent school, Maumee Valley enjoys the flexibility to establish our own curriculum and standards. We can be innovative and bold and we can teach, not to tests, but to the skills and content, our students will need as future global leaders.

Why an Independent School?

List of 8 items.

  • High academic standards

Independent schools nurture intellectual curiosity, stimulate personal growth, and encourage critical thinking. Students benefit from being around other talented students who similarly love to learn and seek advanced opportunities.
  • Small classes and individual attention

Independent schools have low student-teacher ratios that encourage close relationships. Maumee Valley’s low student-teacher ratio of 10:1 allows us to know our students, teach to their individual needs, and support their passions.
  • Excellent teachers

The strongest teachers gravitate toward independent schools because they have more autonomy within the classroom and fewer students to work with so they can know better how each student learns and what interests and motivates them.
  • Greater likelihood of a student completing a bachelor’s or graduate degree

One-hundred percent of Maumee Valley graduates go on to college and almost two-thirds pursue advanced degrees.
  • Education for the whole child

Independent schools nurture each student’s intellectual ability and curiosity as well as their personal and social growth and civic conscience. Opportunities extend well beyond the classroom to athletic competitions, artistic pursuits, and leadership experiences.
  • Inclusiveness

Independent Schools value diverse and vibrant student communities and welcome and respect each family. At Maumee Valley, 43% of the student body is multicultural including 41 students from eight countries.
  • A community of parents who actively participate in their children’s education

Independent schools promote regular communication among students, parents, and teachers to ensure everyone is working toward the same goals for the student.
  • The opportunity to choose a school with a mission

You can select a school whose philosophy, values, and teaching approach is right for your child. And most important: An education that will pay dividends for a lifetime.

Mike Hills, Senior Associate Director of Admission, Denison University

Maumee Valley is a must-stop during my travels to the Toledo area. Along with a beautiful campus setting and first-rate college counseling office, I find Maumee Valley students to be intellectually curious, highly motivated, and well-prepared to handle the rigors of our university's challenging academic environment.
Maumee Valley Country Day School is the only PreK-12th grade accredited, co-educational, and independent school in Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan.
