Maumee Valley Country Day School is excited to partner with Global Public Service Academies (GPSA) to empower our students to become active global leaders by collaborating with local authorities to promote health equity in underserved communities in Guatemala.

Accepted students into the GPSA program have the unique opportunity to learn through hands-on service. They have direct access to the community by offering clinical screenings and providing health education activities.

Students start their Intensive rotation with a one-week pre-trip session co-taught by Maumee Valley faculty and members of the GPSA faculty. During their travels, students explore the community and social issues while developing their cross-cultural understanding and learning basic medical interventions like measuring blood pressure, blood glucose, heart rate, respiration rate, and temperature. Students stay on-site with local host families, work in medical clinics, and receive daily language instruction.

This incredible opportunity allows students to participate in a working, immersion experience. While the physical and intellectual challenges of a GPSA trip are many, the rewards are great.

Extraordinary Opportunities

GPSA for Health's program is an intensive experience for students with a passion for career paths such as a medical doctor (MD), nurse (RN, LPN), pharmacist, biomedical engineer (BME, dentist, or other health occupations.

Unforgettable Experiences

The experience of GPSA students begins in their arrival city. They live with a host family, which creates the perfect atmosphere to practice a second language and learn from and experience culture in another country.

Hands-On Medical Learning

For clinical service, students are divided into teams led by trained college students or faculty. Students learn to facilitate medical interventions and screenings (such as how to measure height and weight, how to check for diabetes, how to measure blood pressure, heart rate, and perform vision screening) and complete an introductory cultural and language training. In addition, language training is intense (two hours, one-on-one per day).

Cultural Exposure

Students not only learn more about healthcare, but they also get to experience a new and different culture and perhaps make some lifelong friends in the process. Participants will be making a difference and starting their medical careers now.
