As an adult infectious disease specialist in Chicago, one would say that I’m at the “frontlines” of this SARS-CoV-2 crises.

I really cannot remember ever being so busy in the hospital. Yet, we in our field are deeply frustrated not being able to offer safe and effective treatments to our patients suffering from COVID-19 infection.

Clearly, this is a very fascinating and challenging time in medicine and I’m hopeful that this current crisis paves the way to better health care in this country.

I also hope that the public recognizes that as the climate continues to change, we will face more unanticipated devastation in unexpected ways.

To me, this SARS-CoV-2 pandemic highlights the importance of the relationship between humans and wildlife.  We must reevaluate the need for intensive animal farming and industrial livestock in our society.

I never imagined that I’d sound so political or sentimental but perhaps it's my Maumee Valley education that has shaped my critical reasoning.

I’m particularly grateful to hear from so many old friends from Maumee Valley sending me positive messages and support.  I wish everyone the best of health and truly appreciate the social distancing efforts.
